The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has
undertaken an aggressive stance in regards to
developing a program to provide technical expertise
and management training to business entities that
qualify as Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE).
The primary goal of the DBE program is to increase
the level of DBE participation in the highway
construction industry. To achieve this goal, ALDOT
has contracted with Historical Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCU) as well as other universities
throughout the State of Alabama.
ALDOT has entered into various contractual agreements with Alabama A&M University (HBCU), Tuskegee University (HBCU), University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the University of West Alabama. The agreements basically ensure that the institutions will provide technical and management assistance, in conjuncture with workshops and classroom training, to certified DBEs and potential DBE certified firms. The assistance is designed to enhance the DBE’s skills and knowledge in the transportation and highway construction industry and aid them in becoming viable independent contractors.
