Transportation Facility Post Construction Discharge Management

As a condition of several environmental permits, ALDOT must effectively manage the quality and quantity of stormwater and non-stormwater discharge from existing transportation facilities (roads, bridges, welcome centers, rest areas, tunnels, etc.). Both structural and non-structural methods are employed while ALDOT attempts to manage and maintain pre-construction discharge characteristics.

Low Impact Development or LID is an approach to managing post construction stormwater runoff utilizing natural systems to the extent possible. A goal of LID is to maintain or reduce the impacts of stormwater runoff on streams receiving the runoff from the development. ALDOT NPDES permit coverage for both construction discharge and MS4 discharge contains requirements for consideration of the use of LID technologies as post construction stormwater is managed.

Tasks:

  • Create, maintain, communicate and execute LID policies, quality control and internal reporting (non airport related)
  • Create, maintain and communicate operational policies (non airport related)
  • Execute operational policies, quality control, internal reporting (non airport related)
  • Create, maintain, communicate and execute LID policies, operational policies, quality control and internal reporting (airport related)
  • Compliance assurance
