Environmental Coordination Mission Statement:
The Office of Environmental Coordination exists to provide internal support, guidance and advice as ALDOT identifies its environmental responsibilities and executes its environmental response efforts. The office provides an internal focal point for environmental issues and promotes ALDOT’s work as being in alignment with the following vision statement for ALDOT’s Environmental Program.

ALDOT's characteristics as a state department of transportation versus those of the typical MS4 municipality have made for unique challenges in the implementation of its MS4 program. The ALDOT MS4 Permit was created to provide a more appropriate mechanism to regulate the ALDOT MS4.
ADEM issued the Permit to ALDOT on March 21, 2013, and it became effective on April 1, 2013. The Permit term is five years, and thus the Permit will be effect through March 31, 2018. The Permit applies to ALDOT Property in the areas of the State covered by other MS4 Phase I or Phase II permits.

ALDOT has developed a Stormwater Management Program (SWMP) to address the requirements of the Permit and other MS4 stormwater management objectives, as required by the Permit. The ALDOT Stormwater Management Program Plan (SWMPP) was developed by ALDOT to provide details of the ALDOT SWMP. This Plan explains the ALDOT MS4 stormwater management activities that will be conducted, the goals corresponding to the activities for the Permit term, the statuses of activities as of the submission of the Plan, and the intended timeframes for the completion of activities.
ALDOT is continuously looking for ways to improve its MS4 Program and Stormwater Management Program Plan (SWMPP).
