Don T. Arkle became ALDOT’s Chief Engineer effective January 1, 2016.
The duties of the Chief Engineer are subject to and under the direction, control and supervision of the Director of Transportation. The Chief Engineer coordinates the engineering sciences as applied to the planning and design of highways and bridges in the state.
Prior to his appointment, Don served as Assistant Chief Engineer for Policy & Planning. He graduated from Auburn University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama. All of Don's 38 years in the engineering profession have been with ALDOT, with 25 of those years in the Design Bureau.
Don is actively involved in several AASHTO committees, including nearly 15 years on the Geometric Design Task Force which is responsible for producing the Green Book. From October 2006 to May 2012, Don served on the Alabama Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors. Don is a past president of the Alabama Section of ITE and the Alabama Section of ASCE. Don has also served as the chairman of the Joint Engineers Council of Alabama. Don, his wife Cindy, and their four children are all Auburn graduates.
