The project is expected to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow along US-82 (McFarland Boulevard) by adding a travel lane in each direction, turn lanes and better access management. The project is one of the first four chosen in the state through the Rebuild Alabama Act and is expected to go to bid in late fall 2020 with construction following soon after. Construction will likely take 2-3 years.

ALDOT has chosen to employ available technologies that address congestion and traffic flow which require minimal right-of-way and allow the current highway to operate more efficiently. The project is expected to cost approximately $35 million.

The intent of this project is to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow along US-82 (McFarland Boulevard). Constructing additional lanes would be approximately 66% more costly than the proposed project due to the amount of right-of-way that would need to be acquired as well as the increased cost of additional roadwork.

The purpose of this project is to resurface and add lanes to the roadway to accommodate the ongoing industrial development in the area. The project will also improve traffic flow and enhance safety.

The proposed project will take place on US-11 between from Daimler Benz Boulevard and the Highway 5 intersection (approximately seven miles). Significant growth in industry over the last 25 years has transformed the US-11 corridor from Daimler Benz Blvd to Highway 5 into one of the most traveled roadways in the region. Traffic volumes have grown by 4.6 percent from 2014-2016, an increase from 1.2 percent from the previous years. These numbers are predicted to increase with the expansion of existing manufacturing plants and the addition of new industries. Therefore, infrastructure is needed to support the growing increase in traffic. Construction for the proposed project is anticipated for late 2020 and will take approximately 2.5 to 3 years to complete.

SR-69 Improvements

The proposed project will consist of additional lanes (northbound and southbound) from just North of Plantation Road to just south of the I-20/59 interchange. It will also include additional turn lanes in order to safely accommodate current and future traffic volumes.
