Online Public Involvement: REVISED AL-216 Diverging Diamond Interchange, Exit 100 on I-59/20

Project Overview

Location: Lake View/Woodstock/McCalla (Tuscaloosa County)

Updates: Modifications to the design for this project have been made since the public involvement meeting held July 10th, 2023. Many of these modifications were made as a result of further traffic analysis prompted by comments from early public involvement as well as traffic analysis collected for the required Interchange Modification Report. Design changes are as follows and are listed from west to east:
  • ● Project limits were extended to the west to accommodate an additional through lane on AL-216.
  • ● The intersection at Youngblood Parkway was shifted westward.
  • ● A U-turn westbound bubble was added at the Youngblood Pkwy intersection.
  • ● A westbound right turn lane was added on AL-216 to the stub-out at the Youngblood Pkwy intersection.
  • ● Right-in only access was added at a commercial property.
  • ● An eastbound right turn lane was added at Love’s Travel Stop.
  • ● Dedicated eastbound and westbound left turn lanes were added at Love’s Travel Stop and Speedway.
  • ● Access to Love’s was modified to provide 2 lanes into Love’s and dual exits.
  • ● A westbound right-in right-out was converted to a Right-in only access at Speedway.
  • ● A right turn lane was added on the I-59 southbound exit ramp onto AL-216.
  • ● A westbound left turn lane was added from AL-216 to the I-59 southbound entrance ramp.
  • ● A through lane on AL-216 eastbound across the bridge was changed to a left turn lane on to the I-59 northbound entrance ramp.
  • ● The westbound right turn lane was added on AL-216 to the I-59 northbound entrance ramp.
  • ● Denied access has been extended to the limits of the DDI on both the east and west ends of the interchange.
The proposed project is located on AL-216 over I-59/20 at Exit 100 near Lake View, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The project proposes to replace the existing bridge over the interstate and add additional lanes from Youngblood Parkway to the I-59 northbound ramp, on the east side of the interchange. The project will reconfigure the interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). This will allow for better sight distance for left turning movements and reduced delays for through traffic utilizing the interchange. Construction of the proposed project will be done in phases and the road will remain open during construction. A few short nighttime or weekend closures may be necessary, but motorists will be notified in advance and closures will be minimal. Right of way will be required for the proposed project. Additional information about right of way aquisition can be found in the ROW Section below.
The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
