Online Public Involvement: Intersection Improvements at US-82 and US-43

Project Overview

Location: Northport (Tuscaloosa County)

The proposed project is located at the intersection of AL-6 (US-82; McFarland Blvd) and AL-13 (US-43) in Northport, Alabama located in Tuscaloosa County. This project will add additional turn lanes at the signalized intersection of US-82 and US-43 as well as an additional lane on US-43 Northbound. Access management in the area of the intersection will also be included. Currently, more than 59,000 vehicles use this intersection per day. This project is expected to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection of US-82 and US-43 during the morning and afternoon peak hours.

New updates have been added to the proposed project, those changes include a realignment of 38th Avenue to line up with the new service road to City Hall. Also in this area, the left turn from 5 Points Road onto US-43 has been eliminated. Motorists wishing to exit 5 Points Road and travel southbound on US-43 will be required to travel US-43 northbound, enter the left turn lane, and make a U-turn.

To reduce the impact on traffic during construction, two lanes will remain open in each direction from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., while the left turn lanes on US-43 and Main Avenue will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Right of way will be required for the proposed project. Additional information about right of way acquisition can be found in the ROW section below.

This online public involvement is to inform the public of the design changes made to address the public’s comments from the initial public involvement meeting. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.

ALDOT is conducting online public involvement for the proposed project. All comments regarding this project must be submitted on or before Thursday, May 30, 2024.
