Online Public Involvement: Adding Truck Climbing Lanes on US-431

Online Public Involvement: Adding Truck Climbing Lanes on US-431

Project Overview

Location: LaFayette & Roanoke (Chambers County)

The Alabama Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is proposing a project that will address congestion issues by providing drivers a means to safely maneuver around other vehicles to continue traveling with less delay than what existing conditions allow on AL-1(US-431). The project proposes to add three (3) truck climbing lanes along US-431. The first truck climbing lane (Site 1) is located north of LaFayette on US-431 northbound, from County Road (CR) 167 to CR 226. The second and third truck climbing lanes (Site 2) on US-431 are located south of Roanoke, between CR 246/CR 278 and CR 253, with one in each direction. The project also proposes to incorporate a dedicated left turn lane for motorists to safely turn east onto CR 278 where traffic evaluations have recorded an increase in left turn movements.

Construction of the proposed truck climbing lanes will not require the use of a detour. Right of way is not required for the proposed project.

The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. ALDOT is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
