Public Involvement

Public involvement is a core component of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for proposed transportation projects. Throughout environmental review and preliminary design, ALDOT engages with stakeholders—individuals or groups with a specific interest in the project—to ensure that community needs and concerns are fully considered in decision‑making.

Why Public Involvement Matters

It gives the public a meaningful opportunity to participate in shaping project decisions.
It creates two‑way communication between ALDOT and the community.
It helps the public stay informed as the project develops.
It helps ALDOT officials gain awareness of local issues, priorities, and potential impacts.

Tailoring Engagement to Each Project

Because every project and community is unique, public involvement strategies are tailored to the specific characteristics of the project area. Effective engagement ensures ALDOT can gather feedback that helps identify:
Potential impacts
Community needs
Local concerns or problems
All comments received during the NEPA process become part of the project’s administrative record to ensure they are considered.

Ways the Public Can Provide Input
