Online and In-person Public Involvement:Intersection Improvements on US-72

Project Overview

Location: Athens (Limestone County)

The Alabama Department of Transportation is proposing the installation of a reduced-conflict intersection (RCI) at the intersection of US-72 and Cambridge Lane just east of Athens, Alabama. RCIs alter how left turn and through movements occur from side roads onto busy main roads.   At a traditional intersection, drivers leaving the side road must navigate across multiple lanes of traffic, often traveling at high speeds, to get to the opposing roadway.   At an RCI, drivers turn right in the same direction as traffic, merge into the left lane, and make a U-turn at a designated location

The area of US-72 near Cambridge Lane experiences high traffic speeds and crash incidents. Installing an RCI at this location will simplify how traffic moves, providing a smoother travel experience for the public.  Drivers leaving the side road will only need to be concerned with one direction of traffic at a time instead of waiting for a gap in both directions to proceed, thereby reducing the potential for crashes.

The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project.   ALDOT is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
