Online and In-person Public Involvement: AL-35 Planning Study in the City of Fort Payne

Online and In-person Public Involvement: AL-35 Planning Study in the City of Fort Payne

Project Overview

Location: Fort Payne (Dekalb County)

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and on behalf of the City of Fort Payne, are conducting a study of the area surrounding the City of Fort Payne. AL-35 has been identified as a corridor that warrants study for potential improvements. We are currently conducting a Planning and Environmental Linkage (PEL) Study to identify transportation issues that may be occurring in the area, potential alternatives to address these issues, and the potential associated environmental impacts each alternative may have. The PEL can be used to help guide the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation for potential improvement projects in the City of Fort Payne.

Currently, ALDOT is requesting feedback from the public to gather preliminary information about transportation issues within the City of Fort Payne and any proposed preliminary alternatives. A questionnaire is available in the 'Submit Your Comments' section below that has specific questions to help ALDOT in the planning study.

ALDOT will hold a series of public involvement meetings that will help solidify a purpose and need for the planning study to better help the communities in the City of Fort Payne. Once the current public involvement meeting is concluded and all comments/suggestions have been received, ALDOT will begin assembling alternatives proposed by everyone engaged in the public involvement process. Additional public involvement opportunities will be held to comment on the identified purpose and need, as well as alternatives that have been created.

A presentation about what PEL is and how it relates to the potential improvements in your communities is available below.

A blank map showing the City of Fort Payne is available in the 'Downloads' section of the website. If there are any alternatives recommended or additional environmental resources that need to be considered, please draw and label any alternatives or resources on your own copy of the map (the map can be downloaded and marked up on the computer or can be printed and drawn by hand) and send it in with your comment form.

All comments regarding this project must be submitted on or before  Friday, June 12, 2026.
