Project Overview
Location: Fairfield (Jefferson County)
The proposed project is located on Interstate 59/20 (I-59/20) in the City of Fairfield, Jefferson County, Alabama. The purpose of the project is to add one travel lane in each direction from Fairfield Boulevard to Valley Road. The additional lanes will be constructed to the inside, towards the median. A concrete barrier rail will be added in the median for the length of the project. The bridges over Aaron Aronov Drive and Valley Road will be replaced to match the new roadway configuration. Upon completion, the roadway will have 3 – 12’ travel lanes and 10’ shoulders.
The proposed traffic control is for the southbound roadway work to be done first. During construction of the southbound lanes, a detour will be utilized. Local traffic is urged to use alternate routes. Thru traffic will be detoured on I-65 to I-459. During construction of the northbound lanes, contraflow will be used to reduce traffic delays. Contraflow is a traffic management strategy that reverses the flow of one or more lanes on a divided highway, allowing them to carry traffic in the opposite direction. The four (4) southbound lanes will be split into two (2) northbound lanes and two (2) southbound lanes. Maps showing the detours can be found in the 'Project Maps' section below. Additional detour and traffic advisories will be provided as necessary.
The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. ALDOT is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
