Online Public Involvement: AL-215 Improvements

Project Overview

Location: Cottondale (Tuscaloosa County)

AL-215 (University Boulevard) is a key arterial route in Cottondale, Alabama, linking Tuscaloosa County to I-20/59, the University of Alabama, DCH Regional Medical Center, University Mall and beyond. It serves as a vital corridor for traffic heading to and from Tuscaloosa, particularly during University of Alabama home football games and major events. Additionally, it functions as a detour route for I-20/59 during incident management. Currently, more than 16,000 vehicles travel this roadway daily.

The existing signalized intersections of AL-215, Buttermilk Road, and US-11 operate inefficiently and are closely spaced, with several business access driveways close to both intersections. The purpose of the project is to improve operational efficiency along the corridor by reducing traffic delays and congestion while enhancing connectivity in the project area.

ALDOT proposes to construct a signalized standard T-intersection to replace the existing intersections on AL-215 with US-11 and Buttermilk Road. Buttermilk Road will be rerouted to intersect with AL-7 (US-11) (Skyland Boulevard). The eastbound approach of AL-215 (University Boulevard) to the new standard T-intersection will consist of two through lanes as well as one channelized, yield-controlled right-turn lane. The westbound approach will consist of two through lanes and one left-turn lane. The northbound approach of AL-7 (US-11) (Skyland Boulevard) will consist of one left turn lane controlled by the traffic signal and one free-flow channelized right-turn lane with an exclusive acceleration lane for merging along US-11. The modifications to the intersection of US-11 and Prudes Mill Road include the addition of a channelized free-flow southbound right-turn lane and a channelized, yield-controlled eastbound right-turn lane. Additional modifications to AL-215 include widening the roadway to two lanes in both directions from Prudes Mill Road to west of AL-216.

This project is expected to improve traffic congestion along the corridor, effectively handle detour traffic from the interstate, increase safety, and maintain access to local businesses. Modifications to local businesses/facilities access will be made to improve the operational efficiency of the corridor. Access to all local businesses/facilities will be provided throughout the construction of the project. Additional information about right of way acquisition can be found in the ROW section below.

The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. ALDOT is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
